Why convert WebP to JPG?

Many images you download from the web arrive as WebP, and then your editor or the form you want to upload them to rejects them. Converting to JPG fixes that in a moment.

Some editing apps, older viewers and upload forms still do not accept it. As a JPG any phone, computer or website opens it, and photos stay small.

About the formats

WebP, Google’s lightweight web format

WebP is a Google format designed for the web, with lossy or lossless compression and transparency.

Strengths: It is noticeably smaller than JPG and PNG at similar quality, so pages load faster.

Limits: Some editing apps, older viewers and upload forms still do not accept it.

JPG, the most widespread photo format

JPG (or JPEG) compresses photos lossily: it drops details the eye barely notices so the file is much smaller.

Strengths: Every phone, computer, social network and app can open it, and it is ideal for photographs.

Limits: It has no transparency and loses a little quality each time it is edited and saved again.

  2. 2Check that the target is JPG and open the options if you want to adjust it.
  3. 3Press “Convert” and download each JPG, or all of them in a ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

Is my WebP uploaded to a server to turn it into JPG?

No. The WebP to JPG conversion runs entirely in your browser, with code downloaded from this site and executed on your device. You can check it in the Network tab of the developer tools or by going offline after the page loads.

What happens to a transparent background going from WebP to JPG?

JPG has no transparency: transparent areas of the WebP are filled with the colour you choose (white by default).

Do I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?

A little: JPG uses lossy compression. At the default quality the difference is not visible to the naked eye, and you can raise it in the options for maximum quality.

Is there a size limit?

Your device’s memory sets the limit: on desktop, images up to about 100 megapixels; on mobile, up to 16.7. If an image is too large you are told before it starts.

Can I convert several WebP files at once?

Yes. Drop as many WebP files as you like: several are converted at the same time, depending on your processor cores, and when they finish you can download each JPG or all of them in a ZIP.
