Or paste them with Ctrl+V. They never leave your device.

Why convert BMP to AVIF?

It is huge: a photo in BMP takes ten times more space than in JPG. As AVIF it takes minimal space with good quality, perfect for the web.

About the formats

BMP, the Windows bitmap

BMP stores pixels uncompressed, as-is, the way Windows has since its early versions.

Strengths: Very old software and devices that know nothing about compression can read it.

Limits: It is huge: a photo in BMP takes ten times more space than in JPG.

AVIF, the most modern image compression

AVIF uses the AV1 video codec to compress images, with transparency and high dynamic range colour.

Strengths: It is usually the smallest at equal quality, often half the size of a JPG.

Limits: Encoding is slow and many desktop apps still cannot open it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my BMP uploaded to a server to turn it into AVIF?

No. The BMP to AVIF conversion runs entirely in your browser, with code downloaded from this site and executed on your device. You can check it in the Network tab of the developer tools or by going offline after the page loads.

Do I lose quality converting BMP to AVIF?

A little: AVIF uses lossy compression. At the default quality the difference is not visible to the naked eye, and you can raise it in the options for maximum quality.

Is there a size limit?

Your device’s memory sets the limit: on desktop, images up to about 100 megapixels; on mobile, up to 16.7. If an image is too large you are told before it starts.

Can I convert several BMP files at once?

Yes. Drop as many BMP files as you like: several are converted at the same time, depending on your processor cores, and when they finish you can download each AVIF or all of them in a ZIP.
